Seeking Recommendations for Low-Cost, Energy-Efficient PC Server Builds

I am evaluating components for constructing a dedicated home server focused on low power consumption and minimal upfront cost. The intended server use-cases include lightweight game hosting (e.g., Minecraft or Valheim for small groups), file sharing, and basic web server duties. The priority is hardware longevity, expandability, and efficiency—ideally below 50W idle draw.

Are there preferred motherboards, CPUs (including used or older-generation options like Xeon or Ryzen), and cases for this application? Is it advisable to utilize ITX or MicroATX form factors for better power efficiency? Any experience with undervolting or BIOS-level tweaks to further reduce draw?

Additionally, has anyone found reliable results using external laptop power bricks as server PSUs, or should I stay with standard SFX/ATX PSUs? Looking for tested parts lists and anecdotal data, as well as insight on potential bottlenecks (network, storage, thermal management) at this price/performance tier.

Something barely mentioned so far is undervolting—it’s worth highlighting how BIOS tweaks (like lowering CPU Vcore or tuning C-states) can cut idle wattage, especially with older Xeons or Ryzen APUs. Also, if you’re hacking together an ultra-budget build, look at used Dell OptiPlex SFFs or Lenovo ThinkCentres with i5-6500T/6700T CPUs; they sip power and have shockingly low idle usage, often sub-25W at the wall with a single drive.

On the PSU front, those external laptop bricks with PicoPSUs do work for ULV/ITX builds, but can get sketchy if you want expandability (more drives, upgrades). There’s freqeuntly ripple or reliability issues if you overload them. A solid SFX (even a used Seasonic) will last ages and be more versatile if you ever repurpose the machine.

For bottlenecks, onboard 1Gb ethernet is usually fine for small-group game hosting; just avoid ancient Atom-based boards—they choke under light multi-user CPU loads. SSDs as boot and game drives help a lot, even cheap used ones. Thermal management in tiny cases: don’t trust stock SFF coolers; swap for something like Noctua L9i or similar.

Last note: avoid chasing ultra-low wattage if it costs you reliability or makes upgrades a hassle. Sometimes a used corporate desktop hits that bang-for-buck/power sweet spot better than piecing together niche ITX parts.
